I have always been fascinated by planning and how it shapes the places we live. What is exciting to me is that a career in planning allows you to influence the development process from the very beginning. I am constantly being challenged to be a creative problem solver through analysing situations and providing practical solutions for clients and colleagues.
I have now worked in the Cardiff office for almost two years and have just become a chartered member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. The learning curve has been demanding but I have been constantly assisted by colleagues and the in-house mentoring programme
DPP has been an ideal place to begin my planning career as the firm has expertise not only in the retail sector but in housing, regeneration, sustainability and heritage. DPP is also a learning partner of the RTPI, which is attractive in terms of my career progression.
I don’t think I can describe a typical day as the variety of planning work I am involved in keeps me busy and constantly challenged. I have worked on some exciting projects including securing planning permission for a stadium for Wales' oldest football team Newi Cefn Druids, founded in 1872. I have also been involved in a wide variety of other projects, including a Costa Coffee ‘drive thru’, KFC ‘drive thru’ and the regeneration of Madeley District Centre.
The business development rationale within the company encourages everyone, at all levels, to go out and meet a range of construction professionals, improve our network of contacts and bring in new clients of our own.
I enjoy working in the Cardiff office as it’s a very social place and we regularly participate in a range of sporting activities and charitable events. I am part of the ‘Dynamo DPP’ 5-a-side football team, which is a formidable force I’d like to add, and last year I participated in the ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ for cancer charity Tenovus. Most of the office got involved so it really brought our team together and was a very rewarding thing to do.
