Whilst studying at the University of Edinburgh, where I read Geography at undergraduate level, I saw Planning as a natural extension of my degree subject which I thoroughly enjoyed. To me planning is a continuation of social geography, providing practical input into improving the communities in which we live, work and socialise. Planning as a profession is at the heart of everything we do, the homes we live in, the roads we drive on, the businesses we use and the shopping centres we visit.
I have just completed my MSc in Town Planning from Newcastle University. I was very lucky to obtain a work placement with DPP during this time. The firm were very supportive during my studies, giving me advice, direction and support to complete my dissertation. Since starting full time work with DPP, I have been able to build on the theoretical foundation that my MSc provided me with.
DPP's Newcastle Office is very busy; the work is fast paced and demanding but it means I get exposure to a variety of areas of planning. I like this aspect of the work and within my first six months I have worked on housing, retail, tourism, leisure and renewable energy projects. Indeed, this wide range of projects means that my job is really varied so no two days are the same!
Since I started in the Newcastle Office I have attended meetings with clients, inter office training days, RTPI seminars and made several site visits. I like the fact that I don’t just sit at a desk day in and day out.
Although the work may be challenging, DPP has an excellent foundation course which pairs junior staff with more experienced planners. This means that I am well supported in my work and personal development. This support and mentoring is really important, as I’m hoping to complete my Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) in the next two years and become a Chartered member of the RTPI.
Personally, I think DPP is a great firm in which to have started my career. The foundation training is excellent, the support network is vast and the workload is stimulating. I’m really looking forward to taking my career forward with DPP.
