Independent planning consultancy DPP has today (26 March) been awarded the prestigious and internationally recognised environmental and sustainability ISO14001 standard.  DPP is one of the first planning consultancies in the UK to achieve this tough standard.

The ISO14001 standard demonstrates the firm’s commitment across its 10 offices in the UK and Ireland to reducing its carbon footprint and to deliver sustainability benefits through its work with clients and suppliers.  The standards needed to achieve ISO14001 were implemented and managed by DPP’s own dedicated sustainability team, DPP Sustainability.

Sunil Shah, a partner and head of DPP Sustainability, said: “DPP Sustainability works with clients to help them achieve, amongst other things, the ISO14001 standard and we believe in practicing what we preach.  It has taken us a little under 12 months to achieve the ISO14001 standard and serves to demonstrate our own commitment and our expertise.”

DPP Sustainability brings together a core of expertise on sustainability, energy and climate change legislation that now underpins planning policy.  The revised PPS1 Climate Change addendum and greater demands of stakeholders are ensuring that sustainability issues are identified, respected and embedded within the development process. This means that sustainability advice is not an optional extra; it is now a part of DPP’s service to all of its clients.

Sunil Shah joined DPP in January 2009 having previously helped very large companies such as American Express, BP and BAE Systems achieve the ISO14001 standard.

Sunil adds: “The ISO14001 is a difficult standard to achieve and demands a real change in the firm’s culture to maintain.  DPP, like others with the ISO14001 standard, can expect a six-monthly audit and will have to recertify every three years.

“It is however a standard that we believe will play an increasingly important role.  A number of our clients, particularly those in the public sector, demand that their suppliers achieve high environmental and sustainability standards and there are none higher and more widely recognised than ISO14001.”
