Elliott School, Pullman Gardens, Putney Heath - London Borough of Wandsworth

As part of the Government’s ‘Better Schools for the Future’ programme the London Borough of Wandsworth was looking towards the extensive refurbishment of the secondary modern Elliott School in the Putney Heath area of the borough. As a Grade II listed building,Wandsworth sought professional heritage services from DPP Heritage to help them build a picture of the special architectural and historic interest of the school buildings; this in order to inform the project moving forwards.
DPP Heritage prepared a ‘Statement of Significance’ for the listed building, which outlined the history and architectural character of Elliott School and specifically identified those elements or areas within the listed building which were of greatest significance (i.e. most sensitive to change) and those of least significance (i.e. where capacity for change was greatest).

Achievements
The preparation of a ‘Statement of Significance’ for the Elliott School enabled a greater understanding by the project team of the special interest which had led to its designation, and the constraints and opportunities presented by the listing. This better informed the project design and the team’s approach towards obtaining Listed Building Consent. The ‘Statement of Significance’ also served to positively engage English Heritage in ongoing pre-application negotiations.
