case study

Micklefield Hall

DPP Heritage was brought in to work alongside planning colleagues to advise on the proposed change of use and conversion of a disused grade II listed barn, for a wedding and events space in association with the nearby 18th century house, at Micklefield Hall in rural Hertfordshire.

Working closely with the client team and the statutory authorities at pre-application stage we promoted the benefits of the scheme and influenced the emerging design to address historic building constraints. A Listed Building Statement was prepared and submitted in support of the applications based upon an assessment of the special interest of the barn and its sensitivity to change.

Listed Building Consent was secured in February 2009 although planning permission was obtained at public inquiry after an appeal was lodged against refusal. DPP Heritage provided expert evidence and a witness arguing that the importance of preserving the listed building through re-use outweighed the planning objections.

Services Provided
• Specialist heritage advice and services

Achievements
The planning appeal was allowed in August 2009 and full costs were awarded to the client. This challenging project demonstrates the benefits DPP Heritage can bring in helping to guide and support a scheme through the pre-application and application process in discussion with the statutory authorities.
